Education
Dr. Steven L. Rosenhaus' formal education consists of a B.A. in Secondary Education with a concentration in vocal music, and an M.A. in Music Composition, both earned at Queens College (City University of New York). After a hiatus of some 6 years to work in music publishing he returned to earn his Ph.D. in Music Composition/Theory at New York University. In addition to his degreed studies, Dr. Rosenhaus privately studied composition with George Perle (and was the “guinea pig” for Perle's development of the system of Twelve-tone Tonality), piano with Sidney Leader, voice with Ralph Wade, and conducting with Paul Rudoff and with Paul Vermel, Donald Portnoy, John Giodarno, and Samuel Jones at the Conductors Institute of South Carolina.
Teaching Experience
Dr. Rosenhaus taught composition, with specialties in concert music, musical theater, and pop songwriting, at New York University's Steinhardt School for over 30 years. Early on at NYU he also taught music theory, sight-singing and ear training, and a course he developed for composers and music business majors, “Introduction to Music Publishing and Printing.” He has also taught songwriting, the history of rock music, the history of folk music, group piano, and group guitar at Nassau Community College (State University of New York), and keyboard harmony at Queensborough Community College (CUNY).
Dr. Rosenhaus has given composition master classes at a number of educational institutions including the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, the University of Central Florida in Orlando, the Conservatory of Music San Pietro A Majella, Naples (Italy), as well as for members of the U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa Band, also in Naples.
He is a frequent clinician for school musicians across the U.S., working with young composers, conductors, and performers, and gives workshops on topics such as the business of composing, how to listen to music, twelve-tone tonality, and the basics of writing musicals. In 2026 Dr. Rosenhaus will serve as a composition mentor for young composers for the Connecticut Music Educators Association, and the New York State School Music Association.
